A&P Quest1

Updike made it seem like you were in the A&P supermarket the time this was happening. The description was clear and imaginable, I felt as if I was there. It’s possible to form an image of all three girls in bathing suits and what the supermarket looks like because Updike placed emphasis on the description. He went into all the little details that are visible in a supermarket along with those of the girls. Also you can picture the other cashier that was staring from his register which made it possible to somewhat feel the emotion. The way that Sammy was being distracted while ringing up the lady (register watcher) was very clear. When the girls went to McMahon to ask where something was and then when they walked away, McMahon’s reaction was something that you can picture. You can picture that he kind of shocked due to the way the girls were dressed. The way how Queenie leads the other two girls, you can picture how they look walking with each other.  I enjoyed reading this short story because it was very detailed and all the actions were very descriptive. What I didn’t understand was the reason for Sammy to quit his job. He could have just say something to the manager at the said time but he choose to quit. If he wanted to impress the girls, I think that was a stupid act.

  1. I do not agree that Sammy quitting his job was stupid. I think he was being heroic.
He stood up for the girls, Queenie in particular. He connected with her. To Sammy
Queenie had the life he wanted and the status he wanted to reach in his life. He
made an impulse decision and quit his job but he would not be happy if he did not
make that decision. To Sammy it was a heroic decision and though the journey from
there would be hard, but he was willing to move forward.
