Question 2. Research the phrase "white elephant." What is the significance of this phrase in the story's title?
In Ernest Hemingway’s
novel “Hills Like White Elephants”, he uses the reference “white elephant” all
throughout his writing. This phrase generally means something unwanted by the
owner but hard to dispose of. I found it interesting how Hemingway connected
this phrase with this couples situation. The way the man and the girl were
talking to eachotherwas in a way like they were making a heated the decision.
It seemed that the man did not want to go through with it without knowing what
the girls position in this conversation would be. When referring to the phrase
white elephant and it corresponding to the couples conversation and how they
look out onto the hills beyond the train station it seems that they are
probably trying to get rid of a piece of land that they both don’t really want,
but are having a hard time as to whether or not they want to get rid of it.
However, I also think that they are probably debating on whether to leave this
particular area, since they are waiting for a train and that their suitcases
were filled with numerous patches from their previous visits of other places,
that they had stayed in. In knowing this I think that the have visited this
place by the Ebro river in Spain and the man wants to know what will be his
wife’s decision as she is having a hard time answering him and eventually she
begins to get frustrated with him and don’t really get along. During their conversation they tend to say
things will be better like before, reading this makes me think that maybe they
were not feeling like home in this place but, they are still having trouble
deciding whether to leave or not. Thus putting a huge significance on the phrase "white elephant" on this piece by Hemingway.

Question 2. Research the phrase "white elephant." What is the significance of this

Although the man made it clear that he did not want the baby and he wanted
the girl to get the procedure done, if the girl had pressed on about how she felt about
the situation, he might have considered not doing the procedure. Hemingway wrote “I don’t want you to do anything that you don’t want to do-“. This statement
shows how much he cares for the girl and is considering what she is feeling.
Hemingway also wrote “I’d do anything for you”. This shows the man loves her a lot
and would maybe try to entertain her thoughts if she just express her self more on
the situation.
I feel although the man said “I don’t want you to do anything that you don’t want to do-“ he did not truthfully mean it. To me he did not want to be the bad guy in the situation and be forcing her into an unwanted abortion. In one breathe he says that and in the next he is saying "We'll be fine afterward . Just like before... That's the only thing that bothers us. It's the only thing that made us so unhappy." That is his true feeling that this pregnancy makes him unhappy. Regardless of him appearing supportive he does not want Jig to have this baby so instead of saying get an abortion he chose to sell her the dream that all would be normal again.
DeleteI believe it must have been a very difficult decision to make on both part. It might have been a relationship on the side and the man was not prepared for the pregnancy. on the other hand the girl was confuse but didn't want to terminate the pregnancy. This is a real sticky situation to be in . What do you think?
DeleteThe girl love the mad a lot and would go to any extend to make him happy. I feel that the only reason why she is going through with the operation is to make the man happy. I feel that she wants to keep the pregnancy but the man is trying to convince her to get an abortion without making it look so obvious.
