A Raisin in the Sun - Reading Response Question

Hello all!

The reading response is pretty simple and straightforward.

Good luck!

Choose a character from the play, A Raisin in the Sun, and create a character map of sorts.  Describe this character and his/her significance in the play.  What do they dream of having?  Why did you choose to discuss this character?  What about their personality and presence in the play spoke to you as a reader?

  1. The Character I choose is Lena Younger who is the mother or Mama of Walter Lee Younger and Beneather, Mother in law of Ruth Younger and Grandmother of Travis Younger. Her role in the play “A Raisin in the Sun” captures my attention immensely. The description giving by Hansberry about her says a lot about her significance in the play, which I think are leadership, strength, change and freedom. Lena Younger is described as strong and beautiful woman full of strength and wit. Hansberry also states that Lena Younger a woman in her early sixties has faced many changes.
I think Lena Younger represents change and freedom. She is the wining lottery ticket to her family’s problem or so her family thinks, since she is the one with ten thousand dollars paid to her by the insurance company for the death of her husband. Everyone was already counting on her to make their lives a better. Lena younger upon receiving this check never showed a sign of selfishness or inconsideration but however always took into consideration the needs of her family. She represented leadership in this part of the play which she continues to portray throughout the play. When Ruth Younger asked her what she was going to do with her check and even suggested that she take a nice long vacation to Europe by herself, she stated that she was going to put some away for her daughter’s school and maybe buy a home but she never wanted to invest in a liquor shop as Walter Lee Younger was insisting. Maybe Lena young taught it was the Christian thing to do not investing her money into a liquor store even if it was a great business opportunity.
The part of the play that I think shows Lena Younger’s strength and leadership together with change and freedom was the part where she buys a home in Clyborune Park, which apparently is a white neighborhood. She stated that she bought the home there because of it was a good deal, but from Act I, I think she bought the house in that location because she was ready to live like she was ten thousand dollars richer, in a neighborhood that reflected something brighter and more positive. Maybe something that reflected the dreams her past husband and she had when they were starting out their lives or maybe she just wanted a better and brighter place for her family.
