RR cathedral

The story is titled cathedral because the cathedral is the most important part of the story. In all 9 pages of this story the meaning of the story isn't revealed until the monument comes into play.  A cathedral is a massive monument that has many fine details that one could describe in numerous ways.  Yet for Sammy he had difficulty as if it was just a simple white circle.  This is why I believe the author chose this as the picture to be discussed and drawn.   I don't think the meaning of the story could have been understood.  Sammy lacked the ability to describe the cathedral vividly and detailed because he just looked at it.  He was not seeing it for what is symbolizes and what intricate details went into making it.  This is something Robert as a blind man did.  Because he is a blind man he does not have the ability to look and see things so for him to able to visualize objects he focuses on the details.  Robert's approach to conversations and life experiences is detail based as well. When he chose to smoke even though he did not smoke before with Sammy I feel the motivation was to have the experience not just to do it.  He wanted to be able express what he felt like if it came up, that is the type of character I feel he is.
When Robert told Sammy to draw the cathedral it definitely did not want to see it.  He heard the difficulty Sammy had with describing a cathedral so he wanted him to try to draw it from images in his head because it would create a detailed picture that would not have been done if Sammy just was drawing on his home.  I felt by taking away the ability to look at something it makes you have to visualize it mentally and that imagine created in your mind based off of the details will not only be a better picture but a better way to actually see what your looking at,
